Review of LinuxISO.org

December 18, 2000

Are you itching to try out Linux, the trendy new OS on the market but don't know where to start? Have you seen Linux packages in stores retailing for $25 and don't want to pay for something you just want to try out? If you have a fast DSL or Cable Modem connection to the internet and access to a CD-R burner, then www.linuxiso.org is for you!

An ISO image is a file, usually around 650MB in size that is a snapshot of an entire CD-ROM disc. If you have one of these ISO files and use your CDR recording software to burn it, it will make you an exact copy of a CD-ROM. Now, this is useful information, but you may be wondering "What does this have to do with Linux?" The answer is simple: ISO images let you recreate an entire Linux CD for free (except for the cost of the blank CD-R disc), giving you a 100% duplicate of the CDs that stores and online Linux retailers sell for $10 to $50. The cost savings is tremendous, so let's get started!

Head on over to www.linuxiso.org, and take your pick of Linux distributions. They've got nearly all of them:

And for all you BSD lovers out there, they have the latest versions of FreeBSD and NetBSD available in ISO format too! And if you need help with your CD-R software to get these ISO images to burn, they have a handy HOWTO guide available for many of the popular CD-R recording software, so you'll know what to do with the ISO images once you've downloaded them.

I fully recommend LinuxISO.org for all your Linux distribution needs. Why spend $10 on a CD when you can get a blank disc for $2 and make it yourself? You can even download all of them and try out different Linux distributions, giving you an affordable way to find the right one for you. So what are you waiting for? Set your computer to download an ISO image right before you go to bed at night, and by the time you wake up in the morning you'll be ready to try out Linux!
